The other day I got up, made sure children had breakfast and. I just didn't feel like doing anything. I didn't want to work, I didn't want to exercise. Nothing.
Everyone has days like this, those days where you just can't make yourself want to do anything. Most people have no choice. They have consequences that are stronger than the not wanting to do something such as being fired from work, late fees, and general upheaval in their life.
But when you have nothing that forces you to do anything, things change. You don't have to go to work, it's not imperative that you fix that broken handle, and nothing is going to fall apart if you sit down and do nothing.
In essence the only thing to make you get up and go is YOU.
Making yourself do things you know you should comes down to three secrets.
1. Pick one thing - When you have a dozen or more things weighing on your mind, waiting for you to get them done it can feel overwhelming. There's too much on your plate at one time, making it more difficult to actually get any of them done. Pick one even if it's the one that will only take five minutes. Sometimes it's better to pick the easy ones because it doesn't feel like such a commitment.
2. Start - Once you've picked something you have to start doing it. It's like doing dishes. If you really don't want to do them you start with one. Before long they're all done and you've accomplished one of the things on your list. Starting is the true key to getting things done. If you never even start you'll never finish.
3. Continue until you're done - Once you've started doing something continuing isn't difficult. You simply have to keep going until it's done. Starting is the hardest part.
When you find yourself against doing anything, not willing to even try, if you follow these three secrets you'll find you can get going, and once you do keep going isn't nearly as difficult.
You are responsible for you own life. What you do with it, and what you don't do are completely up to you. Either way you have to take responsibility for your actions. Give yourself a reason to start, and even if you can't find that overwhelming reason start anyway, for it's when you start that life really begins.
