When a female patient is giving labor for a long time, she may have a difficult time giving birth to the infant. She may be exhausted, sometimes the newborn baby could be giving signs of being exhuasted or the baby could also not be in the proper stance. In this case, a decision may be made to help the baby alone.

Forceps are the primary method of delivering the baby. Their made up of two metal spoon-like objects that link & can be placed on either side of the baby's head. There generally used by the surgeon and can also be used during a C-section. When it comes to vaginal deliveries, forceps are less common, but can still be used under certain situations.

In certain cases a women shouldn't have to push. For example, if her blood pressure was very high, she had a stroke or heart disease. Then pushing would be bad for them. Sometimes you can support them into labor and have the head to come down through the canal and have the forceps on either side of the head. This gives help to the baby as he enters the world. One can apply enough force with forceps so one doesn't have to push the baby into the world.

In rare cases, the pressure applied can cause damage to the baby's head. One of the implications of using the forceps on this procedure is that it can pinch the baby's facial nerve. This appears on the outside of the babys face in the back. So in some cases babies can be left with a facial palsy usually on just one side, but the good thing is the baby can recover from this very quickly within the first couple of weeks of life. This is why its important for many surgeons & nurses to monitor this. Through the first few weeks after child birth has been done.
