Everyone reacts in a different way when they hit 40. Some people will barely bat an eyelid, whereas others get all panicked and purchase the nearest motorbike they can find. If you think your friend or relative is on the sensitive side about celebrating four decades of living, here are some present suggestions you should probably look to avoid.
Clothing (unless you're sure of the size)
It's often the case that clothes can make a great gift. They are practical and people are often reluctant to treat themselves to something nice. Nevertheless, it's best to avoid giving clothes as a 40th birthday present unless you're absolutely sure of their size. And this applies when buying for both men and women. Buy too small and they could get upset, but go too big and you are at serious risk of causing a great deal of offense. You have been warned!
A Gift Card or Book Voucher
Don't misunderstand me - gift cards and book vouchers are very useful and are likely to be pleasantly received. They're just boring and a littke dull. Indeed, they smack of a lack of though! It's one thing to give vouchers for a regular birthday, but I'm sure you can think of an actual gift for their 40th. It's much better to take the trouble to choose a book you think they'll like or something from another shop you'd usually buy a voucher for. They're only going to forty once, after all.
Gym Membership
Buying a 40 year old man or woman gym membership for their birthday is the not-so-subtle equivalent of telling them they're a little bit fat, and need to get healthy. Even if they're a fitness freak and you think gym membership is something they'll actively enjoy there are a lot of less controversial alternatives, like tennis or golf lessons. It's great to help people in developing a new set of skill, and give them a hobby where they can make new friends.
A Variety of Rave Accessories
This is just going to be a waste of your time and money. Before you convince yourself that any 40 year old is bound to love a neon tutu, and have a never ending need for glow sticks ask yourself this question- "would I use them if I was 40"? If the answer is an emphatic 'no', buy something different. If it's a yes, then you need some help!
Life Insurance
Life insurance is a very useful thing, but it's probably not the best gift for someone who's a little bit sensitive about reaching the big 4-0. It's true that the earlier you set up a policy the lower your premium will be but if they're even the slightest bit upset about getting older it's unlikely to be well received. Maybe you should go for the rave accessories after all?
