Sometimes I get scared that my Iphone might tumble in water.
Whether I loose it out of my hand or jump I into a swimming pool without thinking, there are enough opportunities to kill my cherished tech toy.
Today I will show you methods which might help to get your Iphone dropped in water back together and working. Due to apple's terms and conditions the device will not be exchanged free of charge once it has been exposed to water. This is why I recommend trying out these tricks before running to the Store.
There is no use in holding back the whole story, by declaring that it all of a sudden stopped from operating. Iphones have an integrated water detector that releases pink color. They will know...
The first thing to remember is not to activate your Iphone after it dropped in water.
You ought to know that this is the single most important factor in what you can do right.
Leave the device off, this can be a life saver.
It is just a human reaction to instantly check if the object is still working, but you must leave it turned off.
The humidity inside will cause the fragile electronic parts get electrocuted by short-circuit.
Dry up the phone with a cloth or tissues.
Next, take the SIM card out and hide it in a save place where you will find it again.
Shake the phone so you can get out as much remaining water as you can.
I am not a big fan in using an ordinary hairdryer as the hot air might cause some damage too.
If you got a hairdryer that operates in "cold mode" I suggest that you can use it to speed up the drying process.
Afterwards you got to be patient and give the phone some rest to completely dry.
The best way to do that is with silica gel packs and a plastic bag.
Silica packs come with many water sensitive products. If you have some packing and shipping utilities knocking about, have a look if you can find silica gel inside the packets.
Silica is the perfect compound to absorb moisture effectively.
Now take you cellphone and enclose it with the silica in the plastic bag. It is crucial that you leave it for enough time sealed together. Be patient, anything around 48 hours will do. If you do it to early and try to boot up the phone while there is dampness left, you might regret it.
If you can't find enough silica bags, don't worry there is yet another way which will do the job:
Ordinary rice can work wonders too. Remember that rice can be seen in salt cellars too. It is there for exactly the same reason, to take in the humidity and keep the salt fresh & dry.
So the rice will work just fine too.
You are going to do the same procedure, but right before the iphone is exposed to the rice I want you mind one more thing: Most of the time there is starch in form of dust in between the grains left. I find that a bit messy so you need to eliminate the fine powder. Obviously you can't wash the rice. I would use a fine sieve to drain the dust out. If you are a bit sissy about it, why not wrap your iphone in a kleenex as well.
When this is done you are good to go. Give it 48 hours together in the plastic bag.
Then finally comes the magic moment to revive you precious apparatus. I wish you good luck with it! Even if it doesn't live up to it's full functionality anymore, no need to have regrets, you tried your best...
You can still go and get a replacement phone from Apple which will cost you around 199$.
This will be a refurbished unit and still cheaper than purchasing a brand new one.
