What is it concerning a genuinely handmade knife that will cause the pulse to go fast and the breath to grow quicker? Blade shapes and materials can be produced and wrought by a mechinated apparatus or they may be handmade by means of coal, anvil, and fire.It must be more to producing a quality blade than merely the means of forming and the materials used. There must definitely be a bit more to it.

Can it perhaps be that a small portion of the blacksmith’s mettle is imparted inside every knife? Could it be the age old history of the bladesmithing profession carries with it small portions of every blacksmith that has undergone the craft of metalworking? That one way or another a particular psychic force injects the energy of the smith in each blade he has produced. Is that altogether idealistic drivel? Just maybe, although then again, maybe not. I cannot help but notice a change as I work on a knife. As if in a particular way I transcend and feel as if I have somehow, in some way or manner joined with the fire, metal, and ringing hammer, even though it is merely a momentary effect.

A profound relationship to the past, maybe even past lives, is awoken whilst wielding a hand forged knife or crafting a sword by hand. It is a lot more than merely my passion for times gone by. It is more than solely an rudimentary affiliation with the materials used, for we as humans contain iron and carbon in our structure not unlike steel has. That “fitting” or “right” impression that we sense comes from more than just the basic materials and methods used in it's creation. It is a metaphysical or theological connection to all that ever was and all that will be. The experience is indeed positive. A deeper association to our past and our humanity is completed by virtue of the simple use of a hand crafted knife. It brings out the spirit, offers us a rush of adrenaline, and will cause the eyebrow to rise in reaction to the primal and hardly cognizant conception of a collective human union.

Maybe it is an amalgamation of these dissimilar aspects. A few swords I have held truly do not feel acceptable. Additional inspection has usually revealed that these weren't hand forged or handmade. Machine made knives just don’t suit me. They don't seem to be as fascinating or distinctive. Despite the fact that they might be virtually mechanically “perfect” into it's design, they nonetheless somehow do not have the sense of balance and sensation of a high-quality hand forged blade.

I don’t know for sure although I know very well what I am feeling. A superior-quality handmade blade has an entirely different feeling to it than a machine created blade. Possibly I’m an hopeless romantic or even a nutcase, for that is totally probable. Swords that “feel right” just appear to beg that they should be put to a purpose, regardless of whether that may be pruning hedges, slicing tomatoes, or else doing practice thrusts around the garage pretending to dispatch fell monsters and rescue beautiful damsels. Every one of the blades I own was kept due to it's feel. Several would not be considered cosmetically faultless and you can find even a genuine clunker here and there. Some can be extraordinary with regards to the symmetry in addition to excellence of fit and finish. But one factor all of them have in common is that they just feel “right”.
